Pollution Prevention Programs

At the Napa Sanitation District, protecting the environment is at the core of our mission. We offer pollution prevention guidelines and opportunities that can help your business while at the same time protecting our wastewater collection and treatment facilities, public health and the environment.

Best Management Practices

Best Management Practices (BMPs) for specific industries/businesses contain proven practices for reducing pollution in wastewater. The BMPs issued by the District are eith mandatory or recommended; mandatory BMPs are enforceable under the District's Sewer Use Ordinance. BMPs can also provide you with tools for operating your business while reducing pollution, and may even save you money. BMPs are good for the environment, your customers, and your business. Check out these BMP Fact Sheets for more information.

Dental Practices: The District does not have BMPs for dental amalgam management, but recommends the California Dental Association guidelines.

Hazardous Waste Disposal for Businesses

Protect your business and employees by disposing of unwanted, unused, and out-of-date hazardous waste properly. Napa Recycling and Waste Services offers businesses an affordable way to comply with laws and regulations for disposal of hazardous waste.

A business that generates less than 220 pounds or 27 gallons of hazardous waste a month is considered a Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG) and can dispose of hazardous waste at the Hazardous Waste Collection Facility. Appointments are required and there is a charge for this service.

Call the Hazardous Waste Collection Facility for more information and appointments at (800) 984-9661. The Napa County Department of  Planning, Building and Environmental Services oversees business hazardous materials plans; you can reach them at (707) 253-4471.

Green Business Program

The Bay Area Green Business Program distinguishes small businesses that protect, preserve and sustain our environment. This partnership of environmental agencies and utilities assists, offers incentives, and verifies that participating businesses conserve energy and water, minimize waste, prevent pollution, and shrink their carbon footprints.

Businesses that meet the prescribed standards are officially recognized as Bay Area Green Businesses. This process can improve your business, potentially save you money and attract new customers. Visit their website to find out how you can become a certified Bay Area Green Business.
